HISTORICAL NOTES

The piece is the 10th in the "Clavier-Büchlein vor Wilhelm Friedemann Bach", Bach’s eldest son. Bach began composing the collection on 22nd January 1720 in Cöthen.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PIECE

More complex than the previous preludes and with a richer technical and polyphonic structure, this prelude sees the frequent inclusion of a third voice, in addition to a series of repeated chords that constitute the counterpoint based on semiquavers that characterizes the theme of the prelude. The piece is structured as a single large prelude with a very concise idea but flexible enough so as to undergo different modulations, which is exploited in different registers. Upon these several small divertimenti are built which ensure continuity with the initial structure. This prelude is similar in structure to the inventions and symphonies present within the same volume.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

The way this prelude is written calls for a full-bodied timbre, therefore I did not choose a very rapid metronome speed so as to ensure that it would not lose its incisiveness and character. On the other hand the frequency and closeness of the staccato chords means there is a risk of excessive harshness of timbre, which is why I have endeavoured to give an intensity to the chords to guarantee their fullness. From a technical point of view, the piece is suitable for students from the third level course onwards.
